Adele.

My inspiration for change

In 1995 I was a supermarket checkout girl working at Woolworths.   The OCD in me love packing the groceries and the 'swipe & bag' system worked. Unless, someone brought their own bags...   There was one lady who brought her own bags every week, they were all different shapes size, colours, fabrics and not one fit properly on my little bag dispenser.   My frustration soon turned into a challenge, she really didn't want ANY plastic bags!!!   I could do this! As a 15 year old I couldn't understand the logic of bringing your own bags when the supermarket had them right there!   And for free!! One reason I wanted to make sure that I had done a good job packing her groceries was that she was also one of my favourite high school teachers, Adele Churchman.

Apart from the little old ladies with the wheeled/trolley shopping bags, Adele was the ONLY ONE bringing in her own reusable bags.  You couldn't even buy them!  I know that Adele has made a massive contribution towards reducing waste because she has been bringing her own bags to the supermarket for 24 years!!

Now that bags have been banned in 2019, what kind of a difference could she make?   If Adele was visiting the supermarket weekly and getting at least 5 bags of groceries, that's approximately 6,240 plastic bags! Impressive!
